GERYON

start of a sculpt loosely based on the 1st edition D&D version of Geryon, also incorporating some elements of the various mythological depictions or descriptions of him; part of a possible series of figures of several of the 'lords of hell' (and presumably one or two of the ladies of hell, too) for a game-in-the-making being undertaken by Custom Hobby;the D&D 1st edition description is as follows, slightly paraphrased:

Geryon (Arch-devil)

Sometimes referred to as the 'Wild Beast', Geryon is a gigantic ruler of the fifth plane of Hell. This arch-devil is as powerful as a storm-giant, and he loves to grab his opponents and rend them with his claws while stabbing them with his terrible poisonous tail.

A handsome head and torso sit atop his snakey trunk; he has no legs, but travels in a snakelike mode along the ground. He has huge bat wings, and his tail is barbed and drips poison; his arms are strong and hairy, ending in paw-like hands.

Geryon carries a great bull's horn which, when blown, summons minotaurs to his aid.

the original D&D Monster Manual drawing of Geryon, and a quick rough I sketched up to get the gist of the shape I want to start building up to: an old scanned-in skeleton gives an idea of scale at 28mm

a slightly larger version was decided upon (the record of Garyon's height varies from 10-30 feet, this version is somewhere in between, at about 20) - hence, a blow-up of the sketch, retaining the same skeleton for comparative size again. The second and third pictures show the first rough-sculpt of the figure.

further adjustments to the height and length of the overall body; starting to flesh him out a bit now, suppose I ought to start thinking about shaping up some wings, too...

first bit of steroid abuse, here we jolly well go:

- some bulking-up appears to be in order -

here's what he might look like if he earns his wings:

...meanwhile, a bit more progress...
